Europarlementariër Godfrey Bloom van de Britse Onafhankelijkheidspartij noemde het huidige bankenstelsel tijdens een debat over de bankenunie een grote zwendelarij.
Volgens Bloom zijn alle grote banken failliet, maar kunnen ze dankzij het gebruik van fractioneel bankieren geld blijven uitlenen dat ze niet hebben.
“Dit is een crimineel schandaal dat al veel te lang aanhoudt,” aldus Bloom. Hij voegde toe dat de meeste problemen beginnen bij de politiek en de centrale banken.
Valsmunterij
Hij vergeleek kwantitatieve versoepeling, de vergroting van de geldvoorraad door een centrale bank, met valsmunterij. “Andere mensen zouden hiervoor een lange gevangenisstraf moeten uitzitten, maar toch doen overheden en banken het constant,” zei hij.
Terwijl na het Liborschandaal met de beschuldigende vinger werd gewezen naar de retailbanken, zijn het volgens Bloom de centrale banken die de rente manipuleren. Ondertussen draait de belastingbetaler op voor banken die omvallen.
“Tenzij we bankiers, centrale bankiers en politici naar de gevangenis sturen, komt er geen einde aan deze praktijken,” besloot Bloom.
