    Consumed: The Mainstream Movie Putting The GMO Problem In The Spotlight APRIL 2, 2016 / CULTURE OF AWARENESS By Mark DeNicola, Collective Evolution

    For the most part in the cinematic world, the presentation of hard-hitting and impactful truths about pressing global issues has been restricted to the world of documentary filmmaking. Films such as Food Inc., Inside Job, THRIVE, and Cowspiracy are a few which immediately come to mind when listing off documentaries that have and continue to make their mark on the planet.

    But why does sharing content of this nature seem to be restricted to documentarians? Given how impactful a medium film is, would it not make more sense for more Hollywood-style feature films to embrace it as well? Thankfully, we seem to be moving in that direction, and I am happy to share with you all a mainstream feature film that is paving the way.

    The film is titled Consumed, and it follows the story of a mother’s investigation into her son’s mysterious illness, a search that quickly leads her to the world of genetically modified foods. GMOs are a recurring theme here at Collective Evolution, as over 175 articles have been written by our team to date, all designed to shed light on this pressing global matter.

    As the film eloquently reminds us, currently GMOs are found in over 80% of processed foods in the United States. Their dangers are so well-recognized in other parts of the world that Russia has even banned all GMO food products in an effort to protect its citizens. It’s time for North America to follow suit, and the success of this film will hopefully bring us even closer to a world where, at the very least, labelling is mandatory.

    As long as life has existed on earth, so have issues associated with maintaining health and the remediation of disease. Today, when many of us get sick, our first course of action is to call the doctor and make an appointment. After the poking, prodding and potential battery of tests, we leave the doctor’s office with a little piece of paper with the prescription for some synthetic based medication written on it.

    Our current practice of health care is based upon what is called allopathic medicine.

    The premise of allopathic medicine is the use of “opposites” to heal the body.

    Practitioners, instead of addressing the cause of a disease, deal with a health concern by suppressing its symptoms. If a patient is retaining water, they are given a diuretic to promote urination. Likewise, if the individual is suffering from a severe cough, a cough suppressant is administered.

    Early in the 1800’s scientists learned how to extract the active constituents of herbal remedies. They also discovered how to create formulas that mimicked the efficacy of traditional natural remedies out of inorganic sources.

    These “drugs” unlike earlier natural preparations could be patented and sold for a profit. Not long after, allopathic western medicine got its foothold in society with the formation of the American Medical Association (AMA).

    Physicians, in conjunction with their pharmacological brothers began prescribing these newly created “prescription drugs” to their patients.

    By 1904, members of these elite and increasingly powerful groups, like the tribunals of the inquisition, systematically began to attack physicians who incorporated traditional, non-evasive or drug free healing methods in their practice.

    These physicians were often defamed, being called frauds, charlatans and quacks or were put in jail for a variety of reasons.

    ULTIMATELY, THEIR LIVES WERE RUINED.

    GMO’s Are Now Called Bioengineered in the USA: Why This Matters

    It was an uphill struggle to get GMO labeling laws in place, and now things have become more complicated. With the new name, Bioengineered, the presence of GMO’s will be harder to identify in your food purchases. Read on to learn about the changes and how to make wise choices about the food you eat.

    In the days of our great-grandparents and grandparents, there was not much concern regarding food purity and food safety, because wholesome farm-to-table was the norm – not a special event. That is, as long as the people upstream didn’t pollute the river!

    Our generations have more to think about, as over 80% of processed foods in the USA contain genetically modified organisms. The concern for food purity took a twist early last year, when the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) decided to rename Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) as Bioengineered (BE) foods.

    For many decades, tech companies have been developing ways to genetically modify, enhance and (in their opinion) add value to the foods we grow and eat. There is much written on the sketchy “science” that forms the basis of this program of modifying foods.

    Rather than debate those points, the main issue is that the new designation of BE carries a loophole that does not include some GMO foods. Disappointingly (but not surprisingly) this new federal law falls short of fulfilling GMO labeling standards.

    The new law came into effect in January 2022, without much fanfare, and most people didn’t even notice it. The law states that in order to be labeled as BE, foods must contain a detectable amount of genetically modified material. Unfortunately, there are many genetically modified foods that are untestable, and therefore are eliminated from the labeling requirement.
