Uit onderzoek van Milieudefensie en Friends of the Earth Europe in achttien Europese landen blijkt dat mensen het gif glyfosaat in hun lichaam hebben. Bij vijf van de acht Nederlandse proefpersonen zijn resten van het onkruidbestrijdingsmiddel glyfosaat in de urine gevonden. Van alle Europese deelnemers is 44% positief getest op de aanwezigheid van glyfosaat, ook wel bekend onder de merknaam Roundup. De Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) test niet op de aanwezigheid van dit gif op groente en fruit. Milieudefensie pleit voor meer onderzoek en meer controle op dit veelgebruikte middel. Grensoverschrijdend vaccinatienieuws Het Europees Parlement stemde begin juli vóór het besluit over ernstige bedreigingen van de gezondheid. Dit akkoord zal de Europese burgers beschermen tegen een groot aantal grensoverschrijdende gezondheidsbedreigingen.
Een van de belangrijkste resultaten van het besluit is dat het een rechtsgrondslag biedt voor de coördinatie van de vrijwillige gezamenlijke aankoop van vaccins en medicijnen op EU-niveau. Er zal begonnen worden met de aankoop van pandemievaccins: de lidstaten die aan dit proces deelnemen zullen hun burgers onder betere omstandigheden dan voorheen van vaccins kunnen voorzien.
Het besluit vergroot ook het gezag van de Europese Unie in het geval van noodsituaties in de volksgezondheid: het stelt de EU in staat om op haar grondgebied een noodsituatie in de volksgezondheid af te kondigen, waardoor zij maatregelen kan treffen op grond van de geneesmiddelenwetgeving, zodat vaccins en medicijnen sneller kunnen worden geleverd. GERMAN chemicals giant BASF has launched a challenge against an EU ban on pesticides that have been linked to mass bee deaths.
Earlier this year the EU Commission placed a two-year ban on using the company’s Fipronil on ‘bee-attractive’ crops such as corn, due to start in December. Though there have been no direct links between the pesticide – part of a range of chemicals known as neonicotinoids – and bee deaths, the moratorium is designed to give regulators a chance to carry out intensive testing while potentially preventing any more damage in the meantime.
