    Celtic Ambient/Folk music, unlike other forms of “background music”, is intended to enhance acoustic and atmospheric idiosyncracies in the sound environment. Whereas conventional background music is produced by stripping away all sense of doubt and uncertainty from the music, Ambient Music retains these qualities. And whereas their intention is to “brighten” the environment by adding stimulus to it (thus supposedly alleviating the tedium of routine tasks and leveling out the natural ups and downs of the body rhythms) Ambient Music is intended to induce calm and a space to think.

    My daughter recently told me about a powerful lesson at her school. About the Salem witch persecution, their teacher told them: We’re going to play a game. “I’ll whisper in your ear which one of you is a witch. Your goal is to build the largest possible group that does NOT contain a witch. Any group with a witch will receive a failing grade.”
    The teenagers got to work. Exclusive groups soon formed, rejecting anyone who seemed suspicious. “Okay,” said the teacher. Finished? Time to find out whose group has a witch. All witches, raise your hands.” No one raised a hand. The children were confused and told the teacher that he had ruined the game. ‘Did I do that? Was anyone in Salem a real witch? Or did everyone just believe what they were told?’ And so you teach children how easy it is to divide a community. Stay tolerant beautiful people. Shunning, scapegoating, dividing does more harm than good. Don’t let the political elite divide us.
