GUERRILLA GIRLS ON TOUR! | look at the current state of women in the arts and beyond.

by apollosolaris

Guerrilla Girls On Tour! is an internationally acclaimed touring, anonymous theatre troupe that creates performances that take a hilarious look at the current state of women in the arts and beyond. Formed when the original Guerrilla Girls split into three groups in 2001, each member of Guerrilla Girls On Tour! performs using the name of a dead woman artist and wears a gorilla mask to conceal her true identity.  No one knows who we really are.  We have toured through 38 states and 13 countries with over 200 performances and workshops in theatres, classrooms, art galleries, community centers, cafes and the great outdoors. We have been featured in many festivals in the US, UK, Poland, Argentina, South Korea, Spain, Slovenia, Greece, Canada, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, China and France.

In 1985, a bunch of female artists, incensed by an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art that included 165 artists but only 17 women, founded the Guerrilla Girls. At the turn of the millennium, three separate and independent incorporated groups formed to bring fake fur and feminism to new frontiers.  Guerrilla Girls On Tour! is one of those groups.  For more about the split of the Guerrilla Girls check out the Art Journal article Guerrilla Girls and Guerrilla Girls Broadband: Inside Story (PDF)

Guerrilla Girls On Tour! is a collective group of women artists creating plays and performances that mix a variety of comedic techniques such as parody, sketch, improv, slapstick and song-and-dance into a distinct feminist theatre style. We make theatre that is interactive, involving our audiences in writing assignments, sing-a-longs and audience participation, which allows us to theatrically address a number of varied issues and engage the audience at the same time. Guerrilla Girls On Tour! aims to educate, entertain and ultimately transform our audiences into identifying as activist/artists. In addition to creating new plays and performances we focus on leading workshops and master classes in using the art of theatre to address local concerns.

We begin developing all of our theatre pieces by collaborating on a visual work. This work is ultimately incorporated into each play’s design via projections. These visuals act as an extra character in each performance – taking on a factual, questioning and, most of the time, satirical voice. Every town we perform in is researched for local statistics and facts about the current state of women and this is incorporated into the script making each performance unique and site-specific.

Feminists Are Funny – Our signature in-your-face performance that is reworked each season to include up-to-the-minute commentary on hot political topics, breaking news in women’s issues and bunches of bananas in a frivolous 70 minute romp.

If You Can Stand the Heat: The History of Women and Food – A hilarious, flour-dusted, theatrically surprising stage conversation meant to dissolve fears of food and encourage freedom of the fork.  Spoiler alert: We wouldn’t be surprised if somebody got a pie in the face.

Silence is Violence – Statistics and strategies for combating violence against women are combined with an up-to-the-minute commentary on hot political topics and an overview of our most famous posters, performance art and protests.
