I was watching a show from the 90’s the other day, Home Improvement, if you remember that one lol. I want to share useful reflection from it as we find ourselves in a moment of high polarity and fast paced information sharing.
In the episode I watched, Wilson (Tim’s wise neighbor) brings up the idea of ignorance as a breeding ground for prejudice.
Simply put, when we pre-judge something without knowing much about it (being ignorant), we are acting as a fool. We might do this with people, ideas, situations etc. We may attempt to feel like we KNOW something about it without really taking the time to learn about it or experience it ourselves.
In the episode, Tim was saying how he thought ballet was stupid, yet he had not spent any time actually experiencing ballet. His perception of ballet was based off of little or no knowledge or experience.
Hence, Tim was being a fool.
The point here is not that Tim should like ballet or that he has to like ballet, or even go to ballet, but that having a staunch opinion or belief about something he knows little to nothing about isn’t helpful and can limit his mind and consciousness.
I know I have done this before, where I pre-judge something without really knowing much about it, only to learn more and totally change my mind.
Where might you jump to certainty about something you don’t know much about?
Where might you have said you don’t like something you haven’t even tried or learnt about?
Do you notice any sensations in the body as you think about things you don’t like but know little about?
Murmuration is the phenomenon of coordinated flight of flocks, forming dynamic volumetric figures of variable density. This is the result of behavior aimed at obtaining maximum information about the surrounding space and other birds. Large schools of fish also exhibit similar behavior. Such incredible telepathy these creatures demonstrate. This shows how many more abilities humans have not yet discovered, beyond the very idea of freedom.
